The grades from six topics on the high school diploma are used to determine admission to college or university. Students can combine grades from higher-level papers with grades from lower-level papers, which are less difficult. A student's maximum cumulative grade point total is 600 points.

Higher education institutions in Ireland, as well as many other European Union countries, impose a minimum grade point criterion that students must satisfy in order to qualify for the study programme of their choosing. For instance, a course may have a minimum grade point requirement of 535 points that any student must meet in order to qualify and apply. This minimal grade point is also known as the "cut-off point," and it varies each academic programme. The cut-off point for highly competitive programmes will be higher than for programmes with lower demand. In some situations, courses or study programmes may be provided to all eligible students that are to all students who have completed qualifying courses regardless of their grades. Students, for example, must have studied mathematics in order to enrol in mathematical studies, regardless of their grade.
