Law in Ireland

As long as there is crime, the law and judiciary in a country will be busy round the clock. Despite the economic upturn, the Law and Legal Services sector remains challenging in terms of graduate recruitment in Ireland. Only 20% of employers are expecting to increase their graduate intake in 2015, reflecting the cautious nature of the sector at present. This research was compiled in the Graduate Recruitment and Employability Survey (2013-14) conducted by AHECS. Employers in the industry are extremely varied in the degree programmes they seek their graduates from.

As expected, Law and Commerce and Business Studies were the most popular. MA in Law in Ireland gives students, who already hold an undergraduate law degree or have practised law for a significant period, specialised and in-depth knowledge of the law and acquire a profound understanding of how law works in theory and in practice, both in Ireland and elsewhere. The qualification enhances students' prospects of employment or promotion in law firms, domestically and internationally, while providing knowledge, skills and experience applicable in a wide variety of careers.

In some provinces, the "Master of Laws" is the basic professional degree for admission into legal practice.MS in Law in Ireland is a combination of psychology and law. Job Opportunities After Law In Ireland Opens the Doors in these Operational Fields

  • Barristers are professional advocates who deal with court work at all levels. Barristers specialise in providing an advisory and/or advocacy service for which they are briefed by a solicitor (or professional body). Barristers can be seen as consultants to solicitors. Much of their work involves conducting research. Some specialise in specific areas: criminal, commercial and family law are the most common, while other specialisms can include employment or labour law and human rights law, personal injury and litigation. Barristers do not usually deal with the public directly. A barrister may only carry out work if instructed by specified categories of professionals, including solicitors (for all types of work) and in connection with non-contentious matters – accountants, surveyors, architects and tax experts in their areas of expertise. Barristers are self-employed. They are forbidden to establish ‘chambers’ and cannot form partnerships with another barrister; they work as sole practitioners and are entirely independent. However, some are employed outside of practice in in-house legal counsel positions with corporations and large organisations. In the public sector, barristers can find work in the Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Law Reform Commission, the Courts Service, and the Legal Aid Board. A barrister (or 'counsel') at the start of their career is known as a junior counsel and it usually takes a few years to build up a practice. After approximately 12 years in practice, a junior counsel can apply to become a senior counsel – a status awarded by the Government and reserved for barristers of particular ability and experience. About 12 percent of barristers are senior counsel.
  • A legal executive is a professional person who is a member of The Irish Institute of Legal Executives. Working with solicitors, barristers, in the Courts of Ireland, and within other areas of commercial and legal practice, they assist in general and specialist legal matters. This goes beyond secretarial or administrative assistance: accumulated practical experience and/or academic credentials qualifies them to work with a solicitor or other legal practitioner in the handling of client cases relating to conveyancing, probate, criminal, civil, family or other legal matters.
  • Solicitors provide clients with legal advice and representation on all legal matters. Most work in private practice but commercial and industrial organisations also employ solicitors, as do the Civil Service and the public sector generally. The work of solicitors varies as widely as the community they serve and will normally depend on their employers.
